Attracting Attention to Your Display

One of the biggest problems you can have when selling at a craft show is attracting attention.  You are competing with every other crafter/artist at the show.  The task gets even harder when you have other vendors with similar products. In a tough crowd, you need to find a way to set yourself apart.

I found a way to attract attention to my soap booth that has really boosted my sales.A sink with runnng water for attracting attention to my booth.

I have a sink, complete with running water!  Some people absolutely MUST try a product before they even think about making a purchase.  I know I am one of those people.  As a result, I wanted to find a way to encourage people to try my soaps, and fall in love with them!  But I found that was not the only reason the sink helped boost my sales.

Attracting attention – make a battery powered fountain!

People walking by would be fascinated by the idea of running water, in the middle of a park where there is NO electricity.  The amazing part was the range of people I was attracting attention from.  Kids are attracted by the running water, and men are fascinated, and come in to see just how I made it happen.  That means while the men and the kids are checking out the sink, the ladies are able to spend time looking at and smelling my soap.  So just how did I make this work?  Here is a peek behind the curtain.

I started with a pedestal sink, but the base was a bit unstable.  In order to make a more stable base I built a frame from scrap lumber we had laying around the basement.

The frame is large enough to cover a deep cycle battery, hold a milk crate, and support the water bucket under the drain.  The water bucket is filled, and a pond fountain has been attached to the sink faucet.

In order to attach the pond pump to the faucet I had to get a few parts from the hardware store.

You will need to plug one side of the faucet inlet.  The easiest way to find the correct size fittings is to take your sink, or just the faucet, in to the hardware store.  They can help you find the right cap or plug for one of the water lines.  The other water line you will need to connect a barbed adapter so you can connect a water hose from a pond pump to the faucet.

Once you have all the parts for the sink assembled it is time to start thinking about power.  There are a few options here.  First off, if you don’t want to have to worry about hauling a battery around you could use a solar fountain pump.  The problem I had with the solar fountain is the lack of sun from time to time.  If you are in a shaded park, or if it is an overcast day you may not have enough sun to power the pump.

Because of that, I decided to use an A/C powered (plug in) pump.  I did have to do a little rigging to get the pump working.  I wanted to make sure that I had power to last the whole weekend, so I decided to use a deep cycle battery.  (That, and we have one that we use for our trolling motor.)  I visited the electronic section of our local auto parts store and got a 12 volt adapter (like a cigarette lighter or cell phone charging plug) and found the DC to AC inverter I had in the car.

Once I had all my parts assembled I charged my battery and hooked it all up.  I connected the 12 volt adapter to the battery, plugged the inverter in to the outlet, connected the pond pump to the faucet with plastic tubing and placed the pump into a large bucket directly under the drain.  Once everything was in place I plugged the fountain pump into the AC inverter and I had running water!

After making sure the parts all worked together, I placed a milk crate over the battery and covered it with some plywood.  It helps support the weight of the bucket of water and protects the battery and electronics from splashing.

Finish by covering the base with draped white fabric, and I have a conversation piece that draws people in and increases sales to boot!

What ideas do you have for attracting attention and setting yourself apart from the crowd in a large craft show?  I’d love to hear your ideas!
